Since 2009, TODOS - Caminhada de Culturas has been celebrating Lisbon as an intercultural city through contemporary performing arts.
Promoted between the Academy of Cultural Producers and Lisbon City Council, TODOS has contributed to the destruction of territorial ghettos associated with immigration, inviting audiences to socialise with cultures from all over the world in the Portuguese capital.
TODOS 2025
12, 13, 14 September in Arroios
“Side by Side”
To be Side by Side is more than just a striking image: it is an exercise in attentiveness and empathy. A commitment to listening, to caring, and to building genuine closeness between people who, while sharing the same space, often live in separate worlds.
What does it mean, today, to be close to someone? Is living side by side the same as truly knowing each other? Can we say we understand those who live around us? And do we even want to know more about them?
In Arroios, a neighbourhood historically defined by solidarity and deeply shaped by cultural diversity, these questions take on particular weight. In a city where the isolation of older residents is increasing, and where many migrants live far from their families or in vulnerable circumstances, it has become urgent to reconsider what brings us together and what sets us apart.
Since 2009, TODOS – Caminhada de Culturas has sought to respond to this reality with a simple yet, we believe, transformative proposal: to create spaces of encounter among difference. We believe that culture has the power to open paths between worlds, to build bridges between people, and to shine a light on what is otherwise unseen.
That is why, for its 17th edition, TODOS returns to Arroios with a programme developed in close dialogue with the neighbourhood and its communities. A programme rooted in proximity, designed to actively involve both residents and passers-through, crossing generations, geographies, and ways of being. We want each activity to become a gesture of listening, contemplation, and sharing.
In an age of polarisation and constant noise, we believe it is necessary to pause; to look around; to notice what is visible and seek out what is hidden; to create spaces for listening. Only then can we imagine other ways of living together. Only then can we slowly build a fairer, more attentive, more collective city – a city for TODOS.
